PREFACE
Calligrapher and painter Ling-Yeng Chen Young was bom in Taiwan. At the age of two, the family moved to Shanghai, China because of her Father’s employment with the Customhouse and later with the East Asia Shipping Company. While in Shanghai, she went to a Japanese primary school for 3 years. By the end of the Second World War in 1946，the family moved back to Taipei, Taiwan. Now ten, Ling-Yeng continued her education at the Tong- Mung Elementary school, then went to Taipei First Girls Middle School. Ling-Yeng’s first exposure to the Health Services field came by attending the School of Nursing Midwifery. This education allowed her to embarked on a five year career as a public health nurse. As part of her responsibilities, Ling-Yeng provided home delivery, care and education. She helped bring into the world over one hundred babies at her clients^，homes. Later, she attended the College of Nursing with an emphasis in “Nursing Education”. After graduation, she taught “Public Health and Nursing” at two of Taipei’s Colleges.
In 1958，she married Mr. S. C. Young, a Chemical Engineer from Waseda University of Japan and Taiwan University. He was working at the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) as a technical support salesperson followed by a general manager role. They have three children Albert, Shirley and Gloria. In 1976，the Young family immigrated to the United States. Ling-Yeng and her family of five settled in New York where the three children started their new lives in schools ranging from Elementary to High School. All would later become engineers.
Their eldest son, Albert, went to Columbia University and graduated top in his class from the Chemical Engineering Department. He later received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware.
Ling-Yeng’s two daughters, Shirley and Gloria, both went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to receive their education. Shirley doubled majored in Electrical and Chemical Engineering. She then went on to receive a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. Gloria earned her Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. All of Ling-Yeng’s children married and she is blessed with five grandchildren.
Soon after arriving in New York, Ling-Yeng started to work. She also continued her health care education at Pace University and Queens College. In 1979，she passed the State board and received her Registered Nurse (RN) license. This started her 30 plus years of nursing in the United States in the field of geriatric care. Today at the age of 70，she is still making elderly people’s lives a bit easier.
Ling-Yeng’s artistic education started in Taipei with Professor Tsao in calligraphy and Professor Cheng in Chinese painting. She soon stopped because the family left Taiwan. After many years of balancing work, school and sending three kids to prestigious U.S. universities, Ling-Yeng was finally able to rekindle her love of Chinese calligraphy and painting in 1990丨s. She continued her artistic education at the Taiwan Center and the Senior Citizen Center. Over time, she received private tutoring from Professor Wang and Professor Yuan.
As her artisan skills flourished, Ling-Yeng realizes her time to create is finite. She begins to work diligently day and night, sacrificing sleep and leisure time to write her calligraphy and paint. Oftentimes, she spends most of her waking hours creating while maintaining her 6am workdays. This dedication enables her to become the artist she is today.
Ling-Yeng truly believes that “working is healthy” and that “work is a blessing”. “If you want to live, you have to keep active” and “if you want to keep your health, you have to watch your diet and stay active with exercise，，. ‘‘Don’t indulge in smoking and liquor outside of small amounts of red wine each day，，. She realizes that working with others bring joy and friendships and keeps her healthy, active and allows her mind to grow.
Ling-Yeng realizes art provides her the balance necessary to perform life’s duties. Her hobby enhances her work efficiency, while her work enhances her creative perseverance. She appreciates her current nursing facility’s work opportunity. The encouragements and friendships from colleagues and friends bring her lots of courage and joy.
Ling-Yeng appreciates all of her professors, mentors and friends throughout her artisan career. She would like to thank Professor Lee from St. John University, publisher Mr. Kang, photographer Mr. Chao，Mr. Wang (Chong Hwa Bookstore); dear friends Mr. and Mrs. Liao, Mr. and Mrs. Hsu, Ms. Shea (the chairwoman of Taiwan Chinese Calligraphy Association), her children and their families. In addition, special thanks go to all of her siblings; her two sisters and two brothers along with their spouses.
Ling-Yeng feels a deep appreciation for her parents and mother-in-law. They lived long lives and gave her much love and support. She would like to dedicate the publishing of this book to their honor and to those growing older each day. May you find joy and happiness from this artwork as she does. 自序
在中學就讀時，班上有位同學陸曼青女士是朱自清先生的外甥女。文筆之佳，在初二時即投稿「野風」。「野風」爲當時算是高水準的雜誌。時年十三歲的我，眞是佩服的五體投地，嘆爲文學天才。而我也有個小小擅長「數學」只要作業做好，不用溫習，考試常拿103分（全對又第一個交卷加3分），心想將來，一定朝數理發展。結果陰錯陽差地進入護校就讀。反而二個妹妹都讀了數學系。來美後，一個拿到碩士，一個擁有應用數學博士。
人生有得有失，失之東隔，收之桑榆。雖然國文不好但也繼承了父親工整的字體。上課抄筆記的時代，同學都常來借、抄。也不知何時開始喜歡上寫字、畫畫。
由好友陳先生的推介其父在太平公學校時的同學，曹秋圃先生，在龍江街的家受教。印象中，曹老師沒用過紙筆，門、牆上也沒掛一字一文。祗教我回家用九宮格的紙張，重覆地寫同一個字。然後攜去給老師講評。在我認爲寫得不錯的字，經老師解說批評，竟差錯百出。讓我領悟到字的完美境界是無止境的，値得每位學生努力去追求。不久，即移民來美，憾於受教太短，但所學則終身難忘受益，是曹老師最偉大之處。同時期，於女青年會上水墨課，由師大教授鄭翼翔教授四君子，以傳統正規筆法教導文人畫。老師沉默寡言，教學認眞，彬彬君子是眞正藝術家的典範。
居美生活，忙於安家，考試就職，安頓孩子就學。至到小女兒到麻州上大學，才重拾毛筆。阮德臣老師（張隆延先生的高足）魏碑寫得眞好。結字嚴謹、字體規律統一，勝於碑帖。字的神韻高古飄逸。王懋軒老師學術全面，不僅書畫技法高超，書畫理論，書畫史，來攏去脈，聽來頭頭是道，津津有味。每年帶領學生遊學采風，到各國各地交流展覽。老師本身也是學者，到處演說、講學。在紐約帶領數個書畫會，會務指揮有序。
在我學習書畫的過程中，常有挫折、瓶頸、懊惱、憂煩。而我的同學至友林詠梅女士(前台大文學院長之女公子）、紀淑勤女士，暨先生們徐福棟先生（前克林頓政府亞洲事務的顧問），廖有土先生（廖修平先生之兄長）是我作品的首位評審員，也是我傾訴的對象。是支持我努力以赴的最大動力。
今天，我不僅要感謝歷來的教授們，也謝謝我的至友們多年的支持。台灣中國書畫會理事長，謝季芸女士，不棄在遠也多賜鼓勵，更介紹美術設計康志嘉先生。
承蒙聖約翰大學，李又寧教授，介紹青年有爲的攝影師趙傑克先生，細心精準的攝影，及康志嘉先生、張小姐精心設計規劃才能成就出這本書。還有中華書局的王明道先生、游汝鏘先生、羅茱麗夫人的賞識與信任。此外，意見相左，又常嚴厲批評，因而常常爭吵，但始終不離不棄的外子楊勝珍。兄弟姊妹、孩子們及他們的另一半，默默地支持，親朋好友們、職場上的同事們的愛護，眞是衷心感謝。
最重要的是，我的雙親，因與之分隔兩地；加州、紐約。在父母相繼於二〇〇二年與二〇〇五年（九十一歲與九十三歲）過世之前，每年只能去加州省親兩次，他們不在乎我的成就與否，只盼望我們健康、快樂，並享受人生。在他們有生之年，不能承歡膝下，是我終身的遺憾。還有世上最好的婆婆，她於九十六歲高齡逝世於台北，都是我心中的至痛與懷念。謹以此書向他們告慰、紀念。同時此書也做爲我七十歲書畫的回顧集。淺薄疏陋之處在所難免，敬懇書畫前輩們，不吝指教。

台灣台北市大稻埕人。生於台灣淡水。兩歲時，隨父母移居上海虹口，約八年於一九四六年回歸台灣台北。小學就讀於東門小學，繼入北一女再就學護理助產四年之後，進入現國立台北護理大學護理教育。畢業後於世界新聞專校、亞東工專教授公共衛生及公衛護理二年。旋即於一九七六年移居美國紐約。並在丕士大學、皇后大學進修，考取紐約州註冊護士州考。於來美一個月後，就職，迄今卅載，未離職，未退休。
最早在國内，書法承曹秋圃先生啓蒙，水墨畫蒙師大教授鄭翼翔先生習四君子。在紐約隨阮德臣先生習書法，王懋軒先生習書法理論，書法史。進深楷行草技法，習國畫山水花鳥，遍臨名跡。多次參加國内外展出。
現為紐約中國書畫會會員。之後力攻國畫，尤重花鳥寫生。近已到古稀之年，遂涉獵宗教、哲學。研讀老子、莊子…等。完成老子道德經行書五千字及莊子逍遙遊行書手卷。整幅寸楷「千手千眼無礙大悲心陀羅尼」由法鼓山象崗道場收藏。
