Kai-Li Cheng 鄭凱莉 , Cellinist

 

Praised by World Journal, Minneapolis, for her “mature technique, a full range of her emotions in her playing that leads the orchestra”, Ms. Cheng appears as a recitalist, chamber and orchestra musician and a concerto soloist in the United States, Taiwan, Japan. She has attended summer festivals including Atlantic Music Festival, Banff Summer Art Festival and the Wiener Meisterkurse fur Müsik and was invited to appear on MPR (Minnesota Public Radio) broadcasting the Beethoven “Kreutzer” violin sonata as part of an interview with Rita Dove on her book, Sonata Mulattic.

In 2013, Cheng performed Mozart Violin Concerto No.5 “Turkish” with Century College in Minnesota and is invited for her presence in their concert series two years in a row. In 2017, Cheng will perform Bruch Violin Concerto with them as the fourth time. In addition to standard repertoire, Cheng premiered many works by living composers and loves to promote New Music by bridging it to Classical Music.

​Important musicians and composers with whom she has worked with include Joseph Silverstein, Pamela Franck, Arnold Steinhardt, Fred Sherry, Sally Chisholm. Ariana Kim, Gunther Schuller, Robert Aldridge, Osmo Vänskä, David Amado, Borromeo String Quartet, Miro Quartet, Henschel Quartet, Escher Quartet and members from Minnesota Orchestra.

A native of Taiwan, she came to the United States in 2006 for graduate study and received her master’s degree and a doctorate in violin performance from University of Minnesota under full-scholarship, where she studied with Young-Nam Kim, Timothy Lovelace, Burt Hara.

​Cheng is a licensure teacher in Taiwan and currently devoted to making music accessible by teaching, giving concerts regularly and joining community music activities. Cheng conducts her private studio. Her students not only won variable auditions and competitions but pursuing the joy of music making. She resides in San Ramon with her family.
