Eastern Michigan University professor Tsu-Yin Wu recognized by the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s 2021 Cancer Prevention Laurels Awards

Eastern Michigan University Professor and Nursing Program Director, Tsu-Yin Wu, Ph.D., has been recognized by the Prevent Cancer Foundation® as a national leader in cancer prevention and early detection with the 2021 Cancer Prevention Laurels Awards.

Dr. Wu, the director of the EMU Center for Health Disparities Innovation and Studies (CHDIS) and the Healthy Asian Americans Project at EMU, was honored with a Laurel Award for Increasing Health Equity through Innovation from the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The award is given to an individual or organization for innovative methods to increase health equity in cancer prevention and screening in communities across the U.S. Awardees have identified and implemented innovations which increase health equity by improving or expanding services at the community level.

According to a release from the Prevent Cancer Foundation, throughout her 20-year career, Dr. Wu has committed herself to providing evidence to support the urgent need for public health funding for underserved Asian communities. Her research resulted in more than 50 publications and revealed pervasive health disparities for Asians and Asian Americans. Globally, Professor Wu has implemented evidence-based strategies, such as training breast health ambassadors; as a result, thousands of women in China and Philippines receive breast cancer screening and follow-up diagnostics and cancer treatments.

During the past year, Dr. Wu has pivoted her work surrounding the COVID-19 needs which included testng and vaccination in most underserved Asian communities.  The CHDIS team and bilingual navigators provided translated COVID-19 related information for Asian Americans and Asian refugee populations. Most recently, collaborating with various vaccine providers, the CHDIS team conducted pop-up/mobile COVID-19 vaccine clinics at community locations, e.g., churches/mosques, community centers, food distribution sites, and administered vaccines to 2,000 individuals in Wayne, Macomb, Oakland and Kent County of Michigan.

The Prevent Cancer Foundation in partnership with the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable presented the Laurels Awards to outstanding leaders in health equity, community service and national leadership as part of the annual Prevent Cancer Dialogue.
