423_台美大學生跨校際協會1998手冊Welcome!

On behalf of all of us at Princeton Taiwanese American Students Association, we welcome you to the ITASA 98 East Coast Conference!

Why Princeton? A few auspicious signs: this year is the Year of the Tiger, so it only makes sense for ITASA to be hosted at Princeton – home of the Tigers. Secondly, February 28 is a landmark date in Taiwanese history – please refer to the 2-28 Fact Sheet on page 18.

Our theme, “Taiwanese Eyes: American Visions” embodies the goals we hope to accomplish throughout these three days: to educate ourselves about the history, culture, and society of Taiwan; to establish and broaden the growing network of Taiwanese North Americans; and to define ourselves within broader American society today.

We hope you will take advantage of a wide variety of events, ranging from academic, political, career-oriented, and cultural lectures, to lighthearted interactive workshops. This year’s speakers are role-models for us as Taiwanese-Americans, as people who are paving the way for us and future generations. Our keynote performance, “Making Tracks,” directed/produced by ITASA’s “Man of the Year,” Welly Yang (see his impressive bio on page 14),embodies all of this by chronicling the story of those before us and by showing how we as Taiwanese Americans fit into a larger framework.

More importantly we hope you come away with new friendships that will last a lifetime. We’re looking
forward to a memorable weekend culminating in Saturday night’s festivities of Taiwanese cuisine, entertainment, and the ultimate Taiwanese social event of the year. Enjoy the conference!
