Welcome Address by Pen Club President – Dr. S.L. Lin 會長林興隆博士

On behalf of the Greater New York Region Overseas Taiwanese Pen Club, I welcome you all to this year’s annual meeting. I would like to extent my special, warmest and sincere welcome to Supreme Court Judge of Taiwan, the Honorable Justice Dr. C.M. Cheng (城仲模 博士大法官),and Mr. C.M Hwang(黃春明先生),an accomplished Novelist, both of whom, out of their busy schedules and other important engagements, chose to honor our invitation and have travelled from Taiwan across the oceans to join us here today. Mr. Hwang will lead us on the subject of Literary Imaginations as Journey of the Soul, while Justice Cheng will explore with us our theme – The Quest of Identity. Dr. Jacob Hwang (黃正雅醫師)and H.J Lee (李惠仁醫師),who are members of this club, will discuss with us the subject of Mind, Body and Aging.

We live in an age of a broken and corrupted society, a society which has literally lost its conscience. Distortions in our present would have led not only to the devaluing but also the loss of the human person, in these precarious times, the quest for identity (as we age) – of whom we are in relation to ourselves, to other human beings, to our nations, and to the transcendent continues to be of utmost importance.

This year’s annual meeting of the Greater New York Region Overseas Taiwanese Pen Club therefore holds much promise for us. Within these few hours, we hope, through our interactions, to journey into our souls, and explore how with art, literature and story – adventures that I describe as weapons against dehumanization – we can create and nurture a community of caring, creating some conscience for our dehumanized society. My notion of a community is like that of a tapestry in which each person’s life forms a beautiful and unique story of the bigger whole. It is my hope that the content of our lives may give meaning and hope to our present world.

In this spirit of community of caring, I would want to extend our deepest sympathy to the families of two of our members, Mr. Tom D. Su(蘇德雄先生)and Mr. Gary Yang (楊呈裕先生)who crossed over to the other side. Shall we at this juncture (stand and) observe a moment of silence in their honor – May their souls rest in perfect peace!

I thank you for your participation and I wish all of you an interesting and meaningful day. Once again, you are welcome!
