At age 11, Gloria Chuang won the National Young Keyboard Artist Competition of Taiwan, under the tutelage of her father and Robert Scholz. Consequently, she played the Haydn Piano Concerto in D with the San Francisco Youth Symphony at the Groves. As a third-generation performer/teacher of piano in her family. Gloria enjoys performing and giving masterclasses abroad and at home in Madison, Wisconsin. She holds a Bachelors of Music and a Masters of Music from the Juilliard School and received her Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1993.

Gloria performs extensively as a soloist and collaborative pianist throughout the country. She has presented in concerts to premier new music and champion accessible music as educational tools to get the community involved and inform them in current movement in music. Among the notable works she has premiered are –“Mai Sang” by Bright Sheng in the Chicago area in the 90’s, and the “Heroique Concerto” by Joaquín Rodrigo in 2001, (where the composer’s daughter, Cecilia personally attended from Spain). Her premier of Matthew H. Fields music, Winds of the Springtime, has won the composer the Contemporary Busoni prize. Her programs in Women of Notes and Spanish music holds ovations from the upper Midwest to New York’s Bruno Walters and Weil Recital Hall at Carnegie. As a soloist, her program of East Meets West, the Confluence of Two Worlds, has received recognition at the National Keyboard Pedagogue and MTNA conventions. As a concerto soloist, she has performed twice with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra of Minneapolis.

As a teacher, many of Gloria’s students have performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra (Naomi Lottoracca and Joel Weng) and won top awards in the composition field. She has also been the piano teacher to Emily Ma, Yo-Yo Ma’s daughter, at Belvoir Terrace and Olivia De Waart, the daughter of Edo De Waart, the music director of the Milwaukee Symphony and the Hong Kong Philharmonic.

Her paintings and works have been exhibited in the Japanese Annual Sumi-e Summer Festival. Her hobbies also include the process of recording. Her CD albums, “My Musical Journey” and “Wave” have been frequently broadcast through Minnesota and Wisconsin Public Radio, and have garnered a special place in those who have heard them
