Welcome to San Diego and thank you for attending the TAC-WC 2017. The theme this year is “Uniting Generations; Integrating Minds”(世代結合•活力智慧). The beauty of collaboration between older and younger generations is that we combine strength with wisdom——a surefire way to accomplish more.
Last year, Taiwan elected its first female President, and the Pan-Green Coalition also won the majority of seats in Congress. After the illicit-party-asset legislature, Taiwan’s transition to justice and judicial reform has progressed accordingly. However, challenge and crisis do love company. The United States has also elected an unconventional leader that only adds more unpredictability to Taiwan’s foreign policy. Economic revitalization and many treacherous political perils both internal and external constantly dare Taiwan’s young administration. Moreover, unlike the executive and legislative branches which can be transformed in one day’s work by the people’s will expressed at the voting booth, the judiciary cannot. Judicial reform, which may be dubbed as the last battle in Taiwan’s democratization, will need cultural strength and moral courage to carry forward. On the other hand, judicial reform is the right medicine to strengthen the nation’s culture and build moral character. This conference brings us both the first-hand information and the insightful assessment. Thanks to our speakers, prominent political and academic leaders from Taiwan, the US, and beyond, who have come to give us inspiring talks. We are most grateful to Presidential Adviser Ching Shieh for inviting the banquet keynote speaker, and to Chairman Wellington Koo for making his trip solely for this conference amidst many unfinished tasks to further Taiwan’s democratization.
We sincerely thank our diligent staff members, the generous donors, the talented performers, and all the enthusiastic participants for making this conference possible. We appreciate very much the GSD Chapter of NATWA for co-organizing this conference.
As is pointed out, “The ultimate test of man’s conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard.〃 It is up to us, who are watching vigilantly to grant our support and publicize our concerns so to help ensure Taiwan’s bright future. It is also up to us, who will continue the journey of Taiwanese Americans in this continent, to uphold TAC-WC for its important function of bringing this and future generations together, and to take actions on the greater purpose so to fulfill our common destiny. But, more importantly, let us have a good time together, now and in the years to come.
