2018 Joint Annual Conference of Taiwanese Canadian Association and Taiwanese American Conference-West Coast

Welcome to the Conference!

On behalf of the Organizing Committee of the Joint Conference of TCA and TAC-WC, 2018,1 would like to extend to you a sincere welcome!

The Taiwanese-Canadian Association (TCA) was founded in 1963, and, thanks to the tremendous efforts and hard work of the thirty five presidents during its fifty five year history, the Association has built a very strong foundation to help its members integrate into the Canadian society and assist in promoting Taiwan.

In the past thirty years or so, the Taiwanese American Conference-West Coast (TAC-WC) has held its annual conference in various cities in the western region of the United States. Last year, it was decided at its annual meeting in San Diego that TAC-WC would hold its conference jointly with the Taiwanese Canadian Association in 2018 in Vancouver, Canada.

Here, I wish to welcome all of you to this historical inaugural joint gathering between the two organizations, to renew our friendship and also to talk about how we can help with the future of our motherland – Taiwan.

We are so honored and privileged to have many guest speakers from Taiwan, America and Japan sharing with us at this conference their expertise, and work in their respective fields which have all directly or indirectly contributed to helping shape what Taiwan is today and what Taiwan is to become in the future. Among these heavyweights, we have Member of Supervision Institute Sherman Chen; National Legislator Wang Ting-yu; Founder of Hi- Lok-To Formosa Alliance George P. Kuo; CEO of Taiwan Research Forum and 2020 Taiwan Shomei (both Japanese organizations) Nagayama Hideki; lawyer Chiu Hsien-Chih; Founder of Medical Platform Chi-wan Lai; Vice-president of International Trades Association Chuang Suo-hang; President of FAPA, Illinois Chapter Hsinjin Edward Yang. Locally, we have invited scholar and historian Harry Hsiao; Managing Director of Asian Canadian Special Events Association Charlie Wu, and Cancer researcher Yen-Yi Lin. All their invaluable talks and sharing will undoubtedly enlighten and benefit us. We very much look forward to their presentations and your participation.

The Organizing Committee has also arranged excellent post-conference tours to make sure the attendees will have opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty and genuine hospitality Western Canada has to offer. Hope you will take advantage of it.

The fact that Taiwan and China are two different nations and Taiwan is not a province of China is very obvious. We have decided to have “Rooting North America and Recognizing Taiwan” as the theme of the joint conference, hoping, while we are trying to get ourselves deep-rooted in our adopted lands, we can also put in efforts to help our native land gain its proper status. We also hope that on one hand, through our collective effort, the international community will help legitimize Taiwan’s status, and, in addition, the government in Taiwan can properly and smoothly accomplish its agenda in its transitional justice process to eventually achieve the utmost and genuine “Truth and Conciliation” for people in Taiwan.

Thank you! I wish you all a wonderful time!
