Jack J. Jou was born in Taiwan in 1939. He graduated from National Cheng Kung University with a degree in Architecture, and practiced as an architect for 30 years in both Taiwan and the United States. Although painting was a favorite pastime for many years, it wasn’t until after his retirement in 1996 that Mr. Jou began to study seriously with local American artists such as Chris Van Winkle, Tom Fong, Nancy Shiershke, and Dick Tarkington.
Today, after nearly 15 years of dedicated painting, Mr. Jou has won numerous local and national awards for his semi-abstract Impressionist landscapes and still-life. His watercolors and Oil emphasize composition and subtle contrasts between light and dark. He pursues lighting and coloring that reflect his immediate impressions, and captures his subjects with both sensitivity and boldness. The resulting canvases are at once spontaneous, vibrant, and flowing.
