Karen Hsiao Savage , Pianist

 

Karen Hsiao Savage is Associate Professor at Washington State University School of Music, where she teaches solo and collaborative piano. She holds doctoral and masters degrees in solo and collaborative piano from Juilliard, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Victoria. Karen’s piano duo with husband Jeffrey, 88SQUARED  won the Ellis Piano Duo Competition, the Abild Prize in American music, and second prize and a Special Mention Award at Concours Grieg International Competition Norway.  88SQUARED   has been the featured guest artist at National Federation of Music Clubs and Music Teachers National Association state conferences in Illinois, Florida, Iowa, and metro DC. The duo has received critical praise for international premieres of Liebermann’s Sonata for Two Pianos in Canada, Singapore, and New York, and for their CD of Liebermann’s complete works for two pianos on Albany Records at the invitation of the composer. Students from the Savages’ studios have been accepted at such graduate programs as Northwestern University, University of Southern California, Boston University, and North Carolina School of the Arts, and they have been awarded competitive teaching assistantships and scholarships. Her major teachers include Veda Kaplinsky, Jonathan Feldman, Sam Sanders, Margo Garrett, Robin Wood, Winifred Wood, and Edward Parker.
