Ms. Szu-Chin Chih received her BA from National Taiwan University, M. Phil from Cambridge University and is a PhD candidate at UC San Diego. Ms. Chih’s research topic is “Shaping the Cultural Memory of Contemporary Taiwan: A Study of the Conservation, Restoration, and Exhibition of Taiwanese Paintings and Films” (當代台灣文化記憶重塑:臺灣繪畫與電影之保存、修復、展演研究).

Dr. Jen-Yih Chu received his MD from National Taiwan University and PhD from UC Berkeley. He is an Emeritus Professor of St. Louis University Medical School and one of the 2019 recipients of this award. His research topic is “Probing Academic Fraud and Promoting Taiwanese Culture” (探討學術不端及推廣台灣文化).

Dr. Isabelle Cheng received her PhD in Politics and International Studies from University of London, UK and is a Senior Lecturer in East Asian and International Studies at School of Area Studies, History, Politics and Literature, University of Portsmouth. Her research topic is “Facing Up to Sustainable Development Goals in the Wake of the Covid-19 Pandemic: Migrant Workers, Women and Children in Taiwan and Beyond” (疫情下的永續發展目標:台灣與全球移工、女性及兒童的不平等處境).

Ms. Li-Hsiang Huang received her Master of Music from Detmold University of Music, Germany and EMBA from the College of Management, National Taiwan University. She is the CEO of Taiwan Creative & Care Association and a part-time faculty member in the Department of Music, Soochow University, Taiwan. Her research topic is “Performing Arts Administration and Streaming after COVID-19” (探索疫情後表演藝術管理與串流趨勢新思維).

Dr. Jason Lim received his PhD in History & Asian Studies from the University of Western Australia. He is a Senior Lecturer in Asian History at School of Humanities & Social Inquiry, Faculty of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of Wollongong, Australia. His research topic is “Taiwan and Emerging Southeast Countries: Relations with Malaysia, Singapore and South Vietnam, 1955-1975” (1955年至1975年臺灣與新興東南亞國家馬來西亞、新加坡與南越的外交關係).

Dr. Chi-Ting Peng received her Ph.D. in modern US History from UC Santa Barbara and will soon join the Wilson Center of Washington D.C. as a Visiting Research Fellow. Her research topic is “Donald M. Fraser and Overseas Taiwanese Human Rights Advocacy Campaign in the United States in the 1970s” (美國國會眾議員 Donald M. Fraser與1970年代海外台灣人權倡議運動).

Ms. Ruo-Fan Liu (劉若凡)

Mr. Chong-You Huang is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Civil Education and Leadership, College of Education, National Taiwan Normal University.  He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from the Chinese Culture University of Taiwan and his master’s degree from the Graduate Institute of National Development, College of Social Science, National Taiwan University. His research interest focuses on public policy. Mr. Huang’s research topic is “Transitional Justice Model of the Party Assets in Taiwan” (臺灣的黨產轉型正義模式).

Dr. Yuru Hung (aka Ikujo Ko) has served as Professor, Graduate School of Social Sciences, Hitotsubashi University, Japan since 2011.  Her research fields include Taiwan studies, Japan-Taiwan relationships, and Gender.  Dr. Hung received her bachelor’s degree in law from National Taiwan University and both her master’s degree and her Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo, Japan. Her research topic is “Oral History of the Pre-war Generation Taiwanese American” (戰前世代台灣人的戰後史:以台美人為中心).

Ms. Ruo-Fan Liu is a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received both her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in sociology from National Taiwan University. Her research interests include sociology of education, higher education, inequality and life course, ethnography and mixed methods and East Asia studies. Her research topic is “Diverging Destinies: Score Ladders, College Choices, and Social Inequality in Taiwan.” (分歧的命運:學生升學策略、分數階梯與社會不平等).

宗旨:北美洲台灣人教授協會 (North America Taiwanese Professors’ Association NATPA) 藉由「廖述宗教授研究獎金」獎勵並贊助個人或社團,針對台灣重要進行研究並發表論文,以紀念廖述宗教授一生對台灣的熱愛與奉獻,並發揚光大廖述宗教授於1980年創立 NATPA 回饋台灣社會的精神

研究獎金: 由NATPA 「廖述宗教授基金」頒發,每名受獎者獎金為兩千至五千美元,每年總共獎金為一萬美元。研究時間以一年為限,受獎者發表論文後可再申請。

資格:此獎金所贊助的議題,包括有關台灣的歷史文化、政治民主,社會公義、經濟與科技,環境與生態、國家主權及安全等。申請學者不限國籍,但要認知台灣人有維護台灣主體性與永續發展等的價值觀。

Purpose of the Research Award: The North America Taiwanese Professors’ Association (NATPA) established the “NATPA Professor Liao Shutsung Research Award,” in 2015 to honor the Association’s founding father, Prof. Liao’s lifetime devotion to Taiwan, and to nurture the spirit of giving back to our homeland (回饋台灣社會) that Prof. Liao embraced. The award is to affirm and support an individual or an organization to conduct research relevant to Taiwan and to publish the research results.

Award: The “NATPA Professor Liao Shutsung Fund” will provide $10,000 to fund US $2000 to $5000 to each awardee. The duration of the submitted research project is limited to one year. An award recipient can reapply for the award once the previously awarded research result has been published.

Qualification: The research topics supported by this Research Award cover Taiwan’s history and culture, politics and democratization, economy and technology, environment and ecology, and sovereignty and national security. This award is open to applicants of any nationality and applicants who show appreciation of the value of upholding Taiwan’s sovereignty while pursuing sustainable development for Taiwan are particularly encouraged to apply.

Application process: NATPA will make the announcement in November every year. Any member of a non-profit organization, (such as universities, professional associations) or a civic organization, or any NATPA member can submit the application(s). Application documents, acceptable in English or Hanji, should include: research topic and outline, as well as an explanation of the financial support requested (no more than 5 pages), two letters of recommendation, and resume of the applicant (no more than 10 pages). The application document should be sent to NATPA Professor Liao Shutsung Research Award Committee by email (tunhoule@hsph.harvard.edu).

Selection Process: The NATPA Professor Liao Shutsung Research Award Committee with its seven members will review all application documents and make the selection decision.

Timelines:  Application: November 1, 2017 to March 1, 2018; Announcement of the award decision: April 2018. Time frame covered by the Research Award is from August 2018 to July 2019.

Dr. FANG-LONG SHIH (施芳瓏)

Dr. I-Chun Catherine Chang received her Ph.D. from University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 2015. She has served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography, Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota since 2015. The title of her research topic is “Following the Money: Financing and Financialization of Smart-Eco Urban Initiatives in Taiwan” (錢怎麼來?台灣智慧生態都市發展策略的資金結構與金融化).

Dr. Fang-Long Shih received her Ph.D. from University of London, UK in 2005.  She launched the seminar series Taiwan in Comparative Perspective in 2006 and has acted as chair.  She has since 2009 worked as Co-Director, Taiwan Research Programme, London School of Economics and Political Science.  Dr. Shih has also been Research Fellow at the LSE Asia Research Centre (2003–2015) and has taught a LSE MSc module Taiwan in Comparative Perspective (2009–2012). The title of her research topic is “The Politics of Commemoration of Taiwan’s White Terror: putting the memory of Luku Incident in its place in the post-martial-law third decade” (臺灣白色恐怖的追念政治:在解嚴後的第三個十年,鹿窟事件該如何被放置在適當的地方去追憶?).

NATPA Professor Liao Shutsung Research Award

2016 Recipient:

Dr. CHUNG-HAO (PIO) KUO (郭忠豪)

Dr. Kuo is currently affiliated with the Department of East Asian Study at the University of Illinois at Urban-Champaign. Starting September 2016, he will be a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Chinese School at The University of Hon Kong.  The title of his proposed research is Gastronomy and the Construction of Taiwanese Cultural Identity during the Late Ming-Early Qing Period (1600-1700).
