414_台美大學生跨校際協會1994手冊Welcome to the third annual Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association Conference! Since the first conference at the University of Pennsylvania in 1992, ITASA has expanded from the East Coast across the US and even into Canada. 1992-93 introduced new ITASA Cultural Conferences in the East Coast and Midwest, a Canadian Conference, and the East Coast Conference at Yale University. And still the Taiwanese American network continues to grow, with its newest addition, the Society of Taiwanese Americans (SoTA).

We at Princeton are excited to be hosting the conference with Harvard University at such a turning point. Sometime among the many long (and sometimes frantic) hours of planning for the conference, we discovered how we shared “dai wan shim,” or Taiwanese spirit, and how that has motivated and connected us. We look forward to sharing that with you through our program.

The theme of this year’s conference, Old Connections, New Directions, can take on different meanings for each of us. It underlies all the topics of the program and our vision of the developing role of Taiwanese Americans today. The 1994 Conference is the crossroads for the old and the new. Think of the old connections we each have to Taiwan, to our parents’ generation, to tradition, to old friends. Aside from defining the old ties, this year’s conference has a goal to forge new bonds with our culture and lo gain new perspectives on familiar issues. In this spirit, we have brought issues like women in Taiwan and the environment to the fore and examined new directions on issues of identity and politics. We invite you to lake a fresh look at the old and how it relates to us as young Taiwanese Americans. We hope that you will renew ties with the past and find new experiences and friendships for the future.

Thank you to all the members of the Princeton TASA for all their hard work and to the University and the area Taiwanese community for their support of our efforts.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the show!
